Dan Houlston
Chevrolet Camaro 7.5 litre
SS49 is Dan Houlston, 'We bought the rolling shell in late summer 2006. We gutted it, prepped it and painted it. Next we installed a Trans Am axle with a locker diff, to help with traction and we also put on new Caltracs, monoleaf springs and rancho rear shocks which we got from the States. on the front, we ran standard suspension for the first season but then upgraded to a QA1 coilover package with fully adjustable shocks. An alloy replica fuel tank, built by Normal Fabrication, was fitted into original location.
'The gearbox was initially a rebuilt Turbo 400 with B&M shift kit, but after the first season the clutches were burnt out so we renewed them and put in a TCI reverse shift pattern valve body along with a TCI converter.'
The engine began life as a new LS7 bought from Performance Unlimited in the very early 1990s by Rob. This was raced in the Corvette first with a Weiand 6/71 supercharger, then was rebuilt as a high compression LS7 again and raced for another season in the Corvette driven by Sue. Then the engine was fitted in a Model T called 'Bat out of Hell 2' built by Rob and Sue. This was raced in Super Gas and anything else that took there fancy for a few seasons running 9.9s. The engine was then sold to Frank Mason in about 1995. He's campaigned with that engine ever since, blueprinting and rebuilding when necesary until we purchased it back again at the end of the season in 2006, when Frank went for an alcohol motor.
The Camaro is now fitted with a new full Strange Engineering rear 9" axle with spool, Willwood brakes and chromoly propshaft, see the picture.
There are rumours about that Sue will out for a go in her '50s pickup and maybe Rob too in something... C'mon get in touch and tell us more!
