Plymouth Road Runner 440ci

Father and son team from Doncaster, Chris and Adam Nowak have owned this car for about five years. The SS266 '69 Plymouth Road Runner runs a 440ci engine with Holley 750cfm carb, electronic ignition, Edelbrock Torker inlet manifold, Hedman headers, a home-made 3 inch exhaust with Flowmaster boxes.

An A-833 4-speed manual gearbox with Hays clutch and Mr Gasket Quickshifter brings the power to an 8 inch rearend with 3.91 gears, on monoleaf rear springs. Rigidity is enhanced with some home-made frame connectors. And there's Centrelines with Toyo slicks fitted for racing.

Chris and Adam have had an eventful season in 2008, "The highlight of this season would be finishing number one qualifier at the Northern Nationals with a 14.0002 run on a 14.00 dial in."

"Since fitting slicks we found the ‘weaker’ parts of the drivetrain. First the clutch threw the towel in and then at the next meeting the Sure-grip unit in the rearend packed up.  We got both of these sorted and the car ran a PB of 13.72 at 100mph.  We fitted the monoleafs and some new shocks as the old ones had seen better days."

"Over the winter of 2008-09, we have fitted a 750 double pumper carb, FBO electronic ignition package, custom recurved distributor, fibreglass bonnet, emergency kill switch, fitted a sump to the stock tank, plus all new Aeroquip lines and fittings from tank to carb. We have recently had the car dyno-tuned on John Sleath's chassis dyno.  Overall we are really pleased with the modifications we have made for the forthcoming 2009 season, with the car running a new PB of 13.38 at 102.49mph at York's first RWYB event of this season.  Future plans include converting to manual steering, and maybe fibreglass bumpers."

At the end of 2009, Chris and Adam had the motor stripped, they're converting to automatic transmission too, and are looking for 12s in 2010.
